Thud thud. Thud thud. Kar was running, ebony hooves smashing their relentless rhythm into the earth. Thud thud. Thud thud. The world zipped by, his speed smearing the colors into a featureless blur. Thud thud. Thud thud. It seemed that there was nothing, but the ground beneath him, the horizon before him, and the steady beat that was his constant companion. Thud thud. Thud thud. The sweat beading along his brow seemed to be cleansing him of his problems as a leader, leaving him pure once more. Thud thud. Thud thud. He was as fleet as a mischievous breeze, tireless as the wind. Thud thud. Thud thud. It felt as if he were the only horse in the world. Thud thud. Thud thud. He could go on like this forever, keep running to the end of the earth. Thud... Thud. Thud... Thud?
What was this? His beautiful rhythm seemed to be slowing. Shaking his head in agitation, the stallion slowed to a halt. It was not like him to be tired this easily. Surely he could not have been running that long...? But, as he scanned his surroundings, it truly did seem that he had run straight out of his own territory. The ground beneath him was slightly damp, slippery, and the strange texture must have been what had thrown off his rhythm... This was a problem. Now, he wasn't worried about his herd. He was known for taking time off on his own, and it certainly wasn't an uncommon sight to see him thundering along the plains, alone. They could take care of themselves for a while, he was certain. What had him nervous was the fact that the sun was now setting, its dying rays staining this unfamiliar territory a brilliant blood-red. Never, in his two-odd years of being a leader, had he left his horses unattended overnight.
On the bright side, he knew this place, knew that it was not occupied by a herd. He was not facing a fight any time soon. On the down side? He was far, far away from home, and a journey of several hours stood between himself and his herd. How he was going to get back home before nightfall -and the terrors it brought- was beyond him. Shit. Flicking his head back in agitation, he turned in a slow circle, trying to spot a familiar rock formation, a tree, something that he could use as a landmark. There! A tall, vibrant tree, the likes of which were rarely seen on his plains. He had seen that tree before, and knew that it was on the Eastern border of his territory. Which meant, if he turned about ninety degrees to the left, he should be back on track to where he had last left his horses...
This was pathetic. Here he was, proud leader of the Xenos herd, stranded at the edge of his own territory. He huffed at himself, rather depressed by mental slip. With a sad shake of his head, he whirled around, ready to begin the long journey home. The sun was slowly sinking behind the mountains, off in the distance, as if it were mocking him. Time was certainly not on his side. With one last irritated snort, he shot off like a bullet, racing with all his heart against the amber twilight.

Laelius stretched her legs, eating up the ground, the night air licking at her face and whipping her mane and tail back. A new scent reached her nose and she stopped dead. She coughed, dust filling her lungs. A new scent... not a human at least. A stag. Lia pinned her ears, and her throat started to throb lightly, memories of that one day with Zaafir reaching her mind. She had been saved, and only to be attacked while he watched. She couldn't stand it, she felt tied down, restrained. Lia snatched at the wispy grass that swayed at her fetlocks, chewing absent-mindedly, the scent of the new stag filling her mind. She set off at a slow canter, rocking back on her hind legs. She soon spotted a dark figure, he was short, and his head darted around, almost nervously. Lia scoffed, total stallion, she thought sarcastically.
There was no place to hide here, and Lia tossed her cranium, and trotted forward, directly at him, swishing her tail. She had just gone into heat recently and she watched his reaction. Time to play? It was cruel of her, but she had not-so-good memories with almost every stag. Zaafir had had some potential, but Lia just didn't feel it with him, he watched her get mauled by the mountain lion, just stood there, and then she had bleed out, almost died, and all he did was lay next to her, not try to stop the bleeding, nothing. She watched the new stag curiously, drinking in his small form. Very small, especially compared to Zaafir. The muscles rippled under his coat as he paced, and Lia swished her tail again, more of her scent being released to him. She snorted, loud enough for him to hear, and came to a halt, her audits flicked forward.

It had eased Kar's mind, to be off and running again. After all, once he had started upon his journey, there was nothing more he could do to help the situation. The mere fact that he was trying had to count for something. He could not halt the sun in its path. After all, he was just a regular horse, whether he liked it or not. Besides, if he kept up this pace, he could probably reach his herd before moon-high... And then the scent hit him.
He screeched to a halt, the movement so abrupt that he found himself being knocked back on his haunches. Xenos territory was officially the middle of nowhere. What was a mare doing here, of all places? The stallion staggered slightly as he regained his footing, long tail flicking away the dirt from his undignified stop. He cocked his delicate head slightly to the side, pondering what kind of foolish mare dared venture here smelling quite like that. An urge to voice the thought aloud flickered into his head, and was driven away just as quickly. Nothing would be gained by insulting her this early in the game. And she was obviously alone. A dangerous situation, for sure. He would be doing her a favor by bringing her back to the safety of his herd. Right? Right. He'd offer her the protection of his herd, if only for the night. Whether or not she wanted to stay was up to her.
The entire mental argument took only the space of a few heartbeats, and by then his mind was set. Feeling a small smile decorate his face, Kar slowly turned to face her. Yet, he found that she had beat him to it, as already she was staring intently. Arching his neck high, in a subconscious attempt to show off, he steadily met her gaze. A beautiful creature, this mare. It proved her all the more foolish for wandering about alone.
He spoke, his voice strong, bordering on smug. "Have you noticed that the sun is setting? These plains are a dangerous place at night. No where to run, no where to hide." Snorting softly, he bobbed his head in a gesture that was part nod, part bow. "If you'd care to accompany me upon my journey, I happen to know a place where you'd be safe." He paused then, his silence growing to an awkward length. Though he was determined to be nice to this mare, he could not help shooting an impatient look towards the setting sun. "I have to warn you, though, the herd which resides here moves fairly often. I know this place better than any, and I can give you safe passage to the main bulk of horses, but we really must set off soon. I understand why you may be hesitant to trust a complete stranger such as myself, but time is not on our side, and frankly, I do not see any other options." The arrogant grin slipped away, replaced by an anxious look. When he spoke again, his voice was softer, not quite so cocky. "I could not forgive myself if something happened to a mare while she was upon my land. Please, come with me, if only for my own peace of mind. You'll be free to go tomorrow, I swear it."

The daylight was waning now, closing in on night time. Not a bad time. The mare ran across the ground with huge, space covering leaps that sent her along at a ridiculous pace. Few things held close in her heart, and one of those things was traveling freely; running. It might not be her biggest passion, but she certainly loved it.
The terrain was different from that which she had grown up in, but in a way that was to her benefit. She had been fast before, with sand under her hooves that slipped away and made galloping quickly somewhat more difficult. Here that earth was firm and her pace was much more easily maintained. Desert born and bred and she was definitely going to make good use of it here.
Her cream and golden tassels flew out behind her, long and sparkling somewhat in the low lighting. With a start she slowed, light orbs scanning the horizon. She saw figures, two to be exact. They were near to each other, but at this distance her audits were unable to determine whether or not they were conversing. Perhaps she could go and find out now. Yes, that might just be fun.
Her pillars lifted from the ground, carrying her onward to meet these others for herself. Her nares caught their scents again and she decided that one was a vixen and the other a Stag. She crossed the terra with light steps, constantly careful. Flamma would not trust them just yet. She didn't know how things were going to go, much less the sorts of personalities these other equines had. If the lot of them, now including her, did not mix too well, she wasn't going to stick around too long. Caution was the well advised.

The stallion turned, a smiled across his face, arching his neck. Show-off. Lia thought, with a small eye-roll. 'Have you noticed that the sun is setting? These plains are a dangerous place at night. No where to run, no where to hide,' Lia stopped, looking at him curiously. Did he think her stupid? 'If you'd care to accompany me upon my journey, I happen to know a place where you'd be safe,' he added, and Lia glanced at his small form. Safe? She opened her mouth to speak, yet was interrupted. 'I have to warn you, though, the herd which resides here moves fairly often. I know this place better than any, and I can give you safe passage to the main bulk of horses, but we really must set off soon. I understand why you may be hesitant to trust a complete stranger such as myself, but time is not on our side, and frankly, I do not see any other options,' He said, and his grin slipped away, replaced by an anxious look. 'I could not forgive myself if something happened to a mare while she was upon my land. Please, come with me, if only for my own peace of mind. You'll be free to go tomorrow, I swear it.' Isn't that what all stags said? That they'd protect you, and you could leave if you wished? Lia flicked her tail again, smiling at the look upon his face. "But, mon chéri, if I come with you, won't I be tempted to stay?" She cooed, stepping forward and touching her maw to his neck lightly. A small laugh bubbled from her lips, and she smiled. "But, I must agree," Lia said, giving a small shiver, "That it would be wise. And where is your... herd?" She asked, watching him curiously, "I am Laelius, or Lia, by the way," she said, small talk, small talk.
Lia's audits flicked back, the sound of another equine approaching. Another mare. She pinned her ears furiously, this was not in her plan. But she flicked them back up, a look of curiosity crossing her face. The new mare approached, she looked wary, reserved, and she stopped just out of striking distance of either of them. Lia swished her tail, her scent releasing again. Lia watched the mare, unsure of what to say. What, Hey! How are you? I'm Lia, by the way, get out of here! Uhm, no. She smiled, tossing her forelock out of her sea-foam green eyes, which sparkled in the low light, reflecting the beautiful sunset.

"But, mon chéri, if I come with you, won't I be tempted to stay?"
Kar felt a shudder run lightly through his body as the mare's muzzle tapped lightly at his neck. Her bubbling laugh brought a smile to his face, though he wasn't quite sure why. This beautiful mare's mood seemed to be infectious. "But, I must agree," said the stranger, "That it would be wise. And where is your... herd? I am Laelius, or Lia, by the way." He chuckled, the low rumble echoing through his small frame. "Name's Kar." Pale orbs flickered up toward the dying sun, judging angles and distances with the ease born of experience. "And, if nothing's frightened them off yet, my herd should be back the way I was heading. About an hour and a half's journey, if we move fast."[/b] He winced slightly with the realization that they did not, indeed, have an hour to waste. The stallion was about to turn around and show her the way, when Lia's ears pinned back suddenly. What was this? Perking his ears up curiously, he followed the direction of her gaze. Hmm. Would you look at that. Another mare. He snorted softly, annoyed that he hadn't spotted the stranger first. Lia's proximity was clouding his mind, and the fact made him rather nervous. Ah, well. Surely, if he returned with two new mares, his herd would forgive him for being a tad bit late. Nickering softly towards the new vixen, he called out, voice slightly less confident than he'd like it to be. "Why excuse me, my dear, but you look a tad bit lost. Flamma watched them from her well set distance, quizzical and yet not in any way open to them. One thing she did not like in the least was horses she did not know. Strangers, were to be watched at all times. It wasn't like she had ever been given an extraordinarily good reason to not like other horses, just the fact that her personality kept her distanced from the rest. Not that she had ever bothered to think that it might be considered a bad thing. After all, had she not lived this long and come out relatively unscathed? Indeed, and she was not going to risk the chance now, of openly giving out trust to those who simply had not earned such a thing. It could only be called a smart choice in her position.
Her own golden-brown orbs narrowed as the femme with the sea-foam green ones pinned her ears. Well then. She gave no reaction outside of a minor flick of an audit to show she was considering the threat before her. Other mares had never struck Flamma as friends. But of course, she had never actually accepted anyone for long enough to let them try and act friendly. It had always seemed a silly thing to do though. She pondered the little bits of conversation she had heard, discarding the useless things and settling on names. That was all that was of any use to her in this situation. The other mare, the one who called herself Laelius, seemed not to be the type who might get along well with her. But this was all speculation as she observed the other horse's smile that, frankly, appeared as more of a forced smirk the more she took into account the attitude being displayed. But Flamma always had liked to try and notice the little things that often got ignored. It certainly helped her decide exactly who she even wanted to consider trusting.
When she heard the other, the one who went by Kar, begin to speak, she turned to look at him, caught ever so slightly off guard. How terribly annoying. "Why excuse me, my dear, but you look a tad bit lost. Anything I can do?" he called to her, the air of confidence she had found present in his voice only a moment before was flickering, less of it there. She raised her crania, deciding now exactly what she wanted to do. His words came out as something that should have made her further annoyed, but it just wasn't spoken in a tone that she felt could do that. It was either a good thing, or amusingly sad. whatever she decided, Flamma had her response well prepared as always.
Maybe she would toy with them? Make Lia mad. But no, she figured it just was not her style. That was too... well, just not something she felt she would do. Besides, Flamma guesses that Lia pretty well covered the whole concept already. As usual, it would be the cautious Flamma they would meet. The one who questioned all things said and held trust in reserve. That was how she would act, and her voice hit the mark perfectly, "Oh, I wouldn't call it 'lost'. More of a distancing of myself from all things familiar. But I can assure you, I don't feel at all lost." Even she wondered at her own choice of words there. Maybe it was just her need to feel independent from others. Of course she did not require his help. But she did, in fact, feel like looking for a home. Perhaps that was what she needed. A new herd. That just may do it, "But, I am, in search of somewhere to stay. Maybe not prolonged, but it isn't smart to stay a night out alone." too true words she used, speaking the truth of the matter. She was not one to tempt trouble. So, why not make use of what opportunities found her. She wasn't the kind to play coy like Lia had been. Flamma had her own way to do things, and it definitely worked for her.
